Accolade Adds Rolf Binder To Portfolio

Accolade Wines has bought Rolf Binder Wines in the Barossa Valley for an undisclosed sum.

It comes just days after the Endeavour Group (Woolworths) bought the five-star winery Oakridge in the Yarra Valley.

Accolade bought Katnook in Coonawarra in September last year and is on the look-out for more small premium wine producers.

“We are delighted to bring a business with such legacy and deep experience in the Barossa Valley as Rolf Binder into the Accolade family,” Accolade CEO Robert Foye said.

“The bigger story is the Accolade team is very strong and capable, we are getting some incredible results and we are looking to do some consolidation in Australia and New Zealand.

“We are growing quite well internationally, across the globe.”

Rolf Binder said: “As one of the biggest wine companies in the world, we believe Accolade has the capacity to take Rolf Binder wines global.

“This announcement is also great news for the Barossa and this additional investment will continue to support the Barossa’s profile as a leading global wine region.”

The Accolade portfolio also includes Grant Burge, St Hallett, Petaluma, Banrock Station, Hardys, House of Arras and Jam Shed.

Rolf Binder Wines was established in 1955 and owned by Rolf Binder and his sister, Christa Deans.

The winery name was changed from Veritas to Rolf Binder in 2005 to honour the founder, Rolf Heinrich Binder, who passed away in 2003.

When it went on the market in September last year Rolf Binder Wines had an asking price of about $20 million.

“Accolade Wines has experienced strong growth in the first half of FY21, despite external challenges such as Covid-19, and has ambitious targets for the rest of the year,” Mr Foye said.

Accolade has been owned by American private equity company The Carlyle Group since 2018.
