After a condensed show in 2020, the full complement of 30 trophies for the 2021 Barossa Wine Show were announced last night.
Saltram No. 1 Shiraz (2018), a wine of “great power, complexity, balance and true expression of Barossa” was awarded the top prize – the Orora Beverages Trophy for Most Outstanding Barossa Wine (Wine of Show).
Winemaker Sue Bell joined Barossa Wine Show as chair of judges for her first year in 2021.
“What an honour it is to judge at the Barossa wine show, such a proud region steeped in culture and history,” she says.
“A region that is bold and confident in who they are.
“Given the times we find ourselves in it is also a real privilege to gather and share stories of wine history and current innovations that respect our regions.
“Many of the winemakers normally travelling across the globe spruiking Barosssa are here immersed in the seasons, their cellars and with their viticultural and winemaking teams, so while we saw some great highlights this week, maybe the best is yet to come if seasons are kind to us.”
Riesling also shone throughout the tasting, particularly the Leo Buring Leonay Riesling, claiming a total of five trophies, including the coveted Peter Lehmann Perpetual Trophy for White Wine of Provenance.
Like the trophies’ namesake, the wines awarded in the Provenance classes show a commitment to consistent dedication to capturing the best expression of Barossa. Wines of Provenance, judged across three vintages from current release to at least 10 years old, are a window into the long term thinking of a producer, their focus on a wine style, ageability, adapting to seasons, climate change and a flow of winemakers or sites.
Sue Bell says, “Highlights of this year’s show were the provenance classes. A rare insight into the longevity and consistency of some sites and winemaking culture. The top examples speak of Barossa in style, quality and pride of place. A reminder too, that this is a long game of passionate commitment.”
Barossa Grape & Wine Association CEO James March welcomed the opportunity to return to the traditional format of Barossa Wine Show.
“It is fantastic to see 798 exhibits in this year’s wine show, with the Barossa Wine Show returning to its full complement,” he says.
“The region’s exhibitors, sponsors, committee, judges, and volunteers are the backbones of the show’s success displaying an extraordinary level of collegiality and contribution to Barossa.”
Barossa’s small producers were well-represented among winners, with Atze’s Corner Wines (winner, Most Successful Exhibitor, Small Producer), The Willows Vineyard (winner, best Grenache) and Paulmara Estate (winner, best 2020 Shiraz) sitting comfortably alongside well-known brands such as Peter Lehmann Wines, Yalumba, Turkey Flat Vineyards and Henschke.
