Barossan X ‘redefines the classic Shiraz’

Peter Lehmann Wines has launched a new range of wines called Barossan X which it says redefines the classic Barossa Shiraz with “three innovative twists on the varietal”.

“This new collection challenges conventions, offering wine enthusiasts a fresh perspective on the world-famous Shiraz from Australia’s iconic Barossa region,” says senior brand manager Alfred Loo.

“The Barossan X range represents a spin from the ordinary, pushing boundaries while honouring the rich winemaking heritage of the region.

“Each varietal in this series encapsulates the essence of Barossa Shiraz marrying the rich flavours of Barossa Shiraz with the exuberance of alternative varietals.

“Peter Lehmann himself believed rules existed to be bent, broken, blended and amended.

“With this range, we aim to rewrite the rules of traditional Barossa Shiraz, introducing three exceptional varietals that showcase the diversity and vibrance of our vineyards.”

The new range – which features bright labels – appears to be targeted at a younger audience.

The wines include Barossan X Twisted Shiraz with a twist of Tempranillo; Barossan X Daring Shiraz with a dash of Moontepulciano; and Barossan X Radical Shiraz with a splash of Touriga.

The wines have been made by Lauren Hutton.

“We are thrilled to release this new range as a celebration of innovation and creativity in winemaking,” she says.

“Barossan X embodies our commitment to innovation while staying true to the unparalleled quality that defines Peter Lehmann Wines.”

The range is available at BWS and Dan Murphy’s for $23 a bottle.

The three new wines in the Barossan X wines with PLW tasting notes:

Barossan X Twisted Shiraz
“Shiraz with a twist of Tempranillo. Medium-intensity ruby-red core with a bright crimson hue. Aromas of lifted red cherry and delicious varietal notes of Turkish delight and ripe dried fig gained from the Tempranillo. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright textural mid-palate possessing a firm grip, reminiscent of the varietal’s Spanish roots. The finish is vibrant and bright-fruited with a length of lightly toasted cedar oak notes and savoury dried fruits.”

Barossan X Daring Shiraz
“Shiraz with a dash of Montepulciano. Medium intensity ruby-red with bright garnet hues. On the nose, rich aromas of blueberry, plum and dark fruits intertwined with violet and spice from Montepulciano. The palate is full-bodied with a textural mid-palate dominated by bright red fruits and with nuances of dark fruits, chocolate and cedar oak. The finish is vibrant and satisfying, leaving a long trail of generous juicy fruit and full palate tannin.”

Barossan X Radical Shiraz
“Shiraz with a splash of Touriga. A medium- intensity ruby-red core with a bright purple hue hint towards the aromas of lifted red plum, blackberry that compliments the delicious varietal notes of sour cherry and dried thyme gained from the Touriga. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright textural mid-palate possessing a firm grip, reminiscent of the varietal’s Italian roots. The finish is vibrant and bright fruited with a length of lightly toasted cedar oak notes and savoury dried fruits.”
