Smallgoods comp for wine industry back with a smack

Handcrafted salami lies on a rustic wooden table, showcasing rich colors and textures as shoppers browse through vibrant stalls under a clear blue sky.

The Wine Industry Smallgoods Smackdown (WISS) is making a comeback after 14 years.

WBM newsletter The Week That Was is the official media partner of the smallgoods competition.

Judge Richard Cornish says, “If you make wine professionally in Australia and then turn your hand to amateur salumi making, you could be in the running to take out the prestigious Golden Salami award in the 2025 Wine Industry Smallgoods Smackdown.

“This is an honour covered in glory, acclaim and prestige.

“But it’s worth bugger all in terms of cash or prizes.

“Instead, it’s a chance for Australia’s winemakers to proudly showcase their sausage prowess and demonstrate their ability to ferment in a medium other than grape juice.”

Judging will be conducted blind by a powerful cadre of master salami tasters: Max Allen, Mike Bennie, Dave Brookes, Richard Cornish, Jess Ho, Hilary McNevin and Nick Ryan.

They will be looking for authentic expressions of the traditional arts of salume making.

Judging takes place at the Kelvin Club in Melbourne on Friday 10 October.

“Winners will receive the highest level of kudos, a certificate and volumes of social media glory.”

The categories are:

Hot Salami
Mild Salami
Air Dried Products – Prosciutto, capocollo, pancetta, guanciale, etc.
General Smallgoods – Terrines, blood puddings, rillettes, etc.
Other – Mortadella, speck, lardo, jduja, etc.
