Shaw + Smith in the Adelaide Hills has released a Gamay – the first time in more than 20 years since they introduced a new variety to their offering.
“At the back of our Balhannah Vineyard lies a cool, south facing slope with ironstone-rich soils,” Shaw + Smith says in its newsletter.
“When we thought about what would thrive in this place, with its free draining soils and long ripening season, Gamay felt like a natural fit.”
The 2025 Gamay is available exclusively online and in the tasting room in limited quantities, until sold out.
The tasting note says, “Shaw + Smith’s first Gamay release is a young vine expression – bursting with vibrant red fruits and fresh acidity.
“Silky tannins frame notes of savoury spice and pure, intense fruit on the palate, finishing with crystalline precision.
“Drink now and watch this space as the vines mature.”
The new wine is $45 a bottle.
Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill-Smith MW and Martin Shaw.
They have focused on Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot and Shiraz – and now Gamay.
