WBM cover boy wins global award

Australian wine writer Nick Ryan has won the inaugural award for Best Short Form Writing in the 67 Pall Mall Global Wine Communicator Awards in London.

Nick features on the cover of the July-August edition of WBM – Australia’s Wine Business Magazine.

“I entered the awards because I believe great wine writing should be celebrated,” he says on Instagram.

“When I was shortlisted, I looked at my fellow nominees and felt elevated by their company.

“Today in London I stood alongside them, and so many other brilliant nominees whose eloquence with words, audio and video spread great wine stories.

“Somehow my words pleased the judges enough to win the inaugural award for Best Short Form Writing for my column in the beautiful World of Fine Wine.

“It’s not curing cancer or ending world hunger, but it’s what I do, and I love it.

In the WBM cover story Nick reflects on a time in his life when he didn’t know what he wanted to do – or be.

He got kicked out of university. What for?

“Never going,” he says.

“Do you know how lazy you have to be to get thrown out of an Arts degree?

“I paid HECS on subjects I never even knew I was doing.

“If I couldn’t get a really good park near uni, I would just keep driving and go home.

“I was lazy. I was a bit directionless.”

Nick’s award-winning article was about drinking Krug in a beer glass at The Exeter Hotel, where WBM’s cover story was shot.

Another Australian, Ed Merrison, was a finalist in the award for Best Global Wine Communicator in Long-Form Writing.
