Patrick of Coonawarra has launched a wine tasting matched with edible insects.
While normal wine tastings at the winery are free, the Crickets and Cabernet tasting is $25.
“I really wanted to do something outside of the box,” winemaker Luke Tocaciu says.
“After becoming accredited with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, the tasting idea was inspired by celebrating sustainability itself.
“This involved the creation of our eco-garden, where you’ll find native plants that attract beneficial insects.
“This was the perfect way to combine what we’re doing in our vineyard, with an experience at our cellar door.”
Patrick of Coonawarra’s catchphrase is, “Part science, part art, guided by principles not rules.”
Luke says insect proteins have many health benefits.
“Not only are edible insects a sustainable source of protein, they’re also a nutrient-dense superfood,” he says.
“Cricket protein powder boasts an impressive 69 percent protein content, making it a powerhouse of nutrition.
“They’re packed with essential micronutrients, vitamins and fatty acids, making them one of the best superfoods around.
“With three times the Omega-3 of spinach, twice the calcium of milk, and more iron than spinach, edible insects offer a complete amino acid profile that’s essential for a balanced diet.”
The quirky tasting includes ants, mealworms and crickets.
The insects are sourced from Circle Harvest in Sydney.
The tastings will be launched at the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival next week.
