Continued lockdowns and closed domestic and international borders have forced the cancellation of the 2021 Sydney International Wine Competition.
This is the second year in a row that the competition has had to be cancelled because of difficulties guaranteeing arrival of both wines and judges.
“We had confirmed our judging panel and were on track to accept entries, but the worsening situation in NSW, the closure of state borders and abandonment of the trans-Tasman travel bubble made the staging of the competition this year impossible,” says competition co-convenor, Brett Ling.
“We discussed the issue with freight forwarders and because of the fluidity of the situation, no guarantees could be made.
“Even worse, there was no way we could be certain that we could bring in our elite judging panel from interstate and overseas.
“But we plan to be back in 2022 with the 41st Sydney International Competition, and hopefully with such promising vintages in Australia and New Zealand over the past few years, we look forward to showcasing an outstanding level of entries.”
