Wicks Estate Wines in the Adelaide Hills has purchased the highly regarded Charleston Vineyard, 6km north-east of its home base in Woodside.
The 47.2 hectare estate includes 38.6 hectares under vine including Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Pinot Gris, Prosecco, Albarino and Gruner Veltliner.
The vineyard was previously owned by Australian Vintage Limited (AVL) which owns Nepenthe in Balhannah.
Director Simon Wicks said they had been keeping an eye out for the right vineyard to come on the market for a couple of years.
“We are keen to ensure we can stay true to our mantra of estate grown,” he says.
“The Charleston vineyard was the best one we had seen.
“It covers off on our immediate requirements for Sauvignon Blanc fruit and also allows for future growth across Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.”
Simon said it was an excellent outcome because the fruit that is not required now forms part of a grape supply agreement with AVL for the next three years and potentially longer.
“The Tempranillo, Prosecco, Alberino and Gruener all form part of the supply contract but also gives us the opportunity to explore adding additional varietals to our range with our distribution partner Oatley Fine Wine Merchants in the future,” Simon says.
“Being only 6km from our existing vineyard also means we can manage it without any additional staffing or machinery requirements.”
