Ross Brown – one of the most highly regarded people in the Australian wine industry – was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours.
Another wine icon, Alister Purbrick from Tahbilk, was also awarded an AM for his service to the wine industry.
Ross, 76, was recognised for his services to winemaking and tourism.
He has been involved in the family business since 1970 and is currently executive director of Brown Family Wine Group.
Ross told The Australian that the wine industry – facing numerous challenges – was used to dealing with big cyclical shifts.
“It’s not unusual for us to see this boom-bust scenario in any agricultural industry,” he said.
“You have to have the vision of how you are going to improve things and how you are going to get back on top of things.”
Ross said the wine industry was starting to see a turaround.
“But these things don’t happen overnight,” he told The Australian.
Ross has served on various boards and committees in the industry including with the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia.
He is a past chair of Australia’s First Families of Wine.
The portfolio of brands include Brown Brothers, Innocent Bystander, Pirie Tasmania, Devil’s Corner and Tamar Ridge.
