In every winery’s worst nightmare, Lowe Wines in Mudgee had its Facebook page hacked in June.
They lost a decade of content, memories and 5,800 followers.
For months they tried everything to take back the page, which was overtaken by ‘Christene’.
“She transformed it into something entirely her own, leaving her mischievous mark on the previously family-friendly page,” winemaker David Lowe says.
Lowe Wines didn’t dwell on their devastating loss and dedicated a limited-edition sparkling rosé to the hacker – Jodie, Hacked by Christene.
The wine was formally known as Lowe Jodie Wilbertree Sparkling Rosé and it is one of their most iconic and popular wine releases.
The unconventional tongue-in-cheek response to a cyber-crime is all about encouraging the Lowe community to join its new Facebook page.
“When our Facebook account was hacked, we were gutted,” David says.
“But then the page became ‘Christene’.
“Christene quickly started rebranding our feed with an all-too-familiar confidence, an unapologetic sense of self and a promiscuous disposition.”
Much like the Facebook page, Jodie Wilbertree Rosé has undergone a mischievous makeover.
The wine inside remains the same best-loved sparkling rosé, but the bottle now sports a playful new label that nods to Christene’s bold takeover.
“If you can’t beat ’em, join them!” says David.
“And remember to change your password often.”
