Murray Street won Best Wine of Show at the 21st Marananga Wine Show with The Artisan 2022 Grenache Mataro Shiraz.

The public tasting at Old Redemption Cellar was filled with wine industry, community members and interstate and international visitors, tasting through the wines of Barossa’s western ridge.

Launched by Gnadenfrei Lutheran Church in 2004, Australia’s first sub-regional wine show continues with its original mandate: “to provide an opportunity for all growers/winemakers within the Marananga region to exhibit their wines and to foster community spirit.”

Records from the inaugural 2004 Marananga Wine Show reveal small beginnings with 58 wine entries, growing to 119 entries in 2024.

This year’s entries reflected the region’s diversity and included renowned wine brands, with the addition of six new exhibitors.

The judging panel comprised of Tim Dolan (chair), Marie Clay and Richard Mattner. The associate judge was Julian Bermingham.

Across the ten classes medals were awarded to 69 percent of the wine entries including 12 gold, 24 silver and 47 bronze.

More than 250 people attended the tasting including eight visitors from Singapore.

Wine was poured by a team of volunteers enabling guests to cast their vote for the People’s Choice award – won by Hentley Farm 2023 The Old Legend Grenache.

Funds are donated to local secondary school wine programs at Nuriootpa High School and Faith Lutheran College.

Steve and Jodie Kalleske (Fabro-Weld) and David Nitschke (Nitschke Furniture) were inaugural sponsors of the event, marking 21 years of sponsorship.

The volunteer committee includes Peter Neldner (chair), Jack Weedon (chief steward), Liam O’Dwyer, Sam Pfeiffer, Belinda van Eyssen, Detlev Vosgerau, Phyllis Vosgerau, Graeme Wellman and Cathy Wills.
