Retired winemaker Jim Irvine – known as ‘the Merlot King’ – is selling his private wine collection through Oddbins Wine Auctions.

Jim is one of the original Barons of the Barossa and a legendary figure in Australian wine.

He shaped the Barossa’s global reputation for excellence over his 65-year career.

“This exclusive auction features rare and iconic wines from Irvine’s personal cellar, including vintages that reflect his unparalleled winemaking journey,” says Adrienne Piggott from Oddbins Wine Auctions.

“Collectors and enthusiasts worldwide have the opportunity to bid on these treasures through Oddbins’ renowned online platform.”

The collection includes a bottle of Henschke Hill of Grace 2007, a six-litre bottle of Irvine Grand Eden Valley Merlot 1989 and a magnum of Irvine Grand Eden Valley Merlot 1992.

Jim has had a lifelong passion for Merlot and made it his own.

“In 1981, I had an experience very few have,” he once told Chaine Online News.

“I had two separate tastings of one of the world’s best wines, Chateau Petrus.

“The wonder of this wine never left me and kindled the fire to explore the possibilities of Merlot in Australia.”

You can view the catalogue of 400 lots here.

Jim is retired and living in the Barossa Valley.
