On with the show after bittersweet week

Pikes Wines managing director Jamie Pike remains optimistic after a “rollercoaster week” that saw his vineyard hit by frost – followed days later by winning four trophies at the Clare Valley Wine Show.

All this in a year the Clare winery is celebrating 40 years of winemaking.

Pikes shares this hard-luck story with so many other wineries as frost hit at the height of the wine show season.

“On Tuesday we were hit by a severe frost that has devastated our Polish Hill River vineyard’s early spring growth,” he says.

“The next few weeks will reveal how the vines recover, but at best, we are looking at a 70 percent reduction in yield.”

The four trophies included Best Sweet White for Pikes First Cut Riesling 2023, Best Rosé for Pikes Luccio Sangiovese Rosé 2024, Best Dry White (Other than Riesling) for Pikes Luccio Albariño 2024 and Chair of Judges Award for Pikes Olga Emmie Riesling 2024.

“This news is a tough blow, particularly for our dedicated vineyard team, however, these wins could not have come at a better time, recognising the team’s hard work, expertise and unwavering commitment,” Jamie says.

“Although the challenges ahead are significant, I remain optimistic.

“We have a strong inventory of red and white wines already bottled, as well as in tank and barrel.

“The support of our customers has been invaluable over the years, and I am confident they will continue to support us.

“These recent awards are a testament to the resilience and quality that have defined Pikes Wines for 40 years.”

Pikes Wines also received the WHS Trophy at the SAWIA Awards of Excellence.

This award recognises a project that involved the design and implementation of a new chemical storage and handling facility at the vineyard.

“This is an accolade I’m particularly proud of,” says Jamie.

“Along with our Clare Valley Wine Show wins, it serves as rare external validation – not only are we making great wine, but we are doing it the right way.

“Our team worked collaboratively on this project, and I am thrilled for them.

“We look toward the future and remain steadfast in our mission to produce exceptional wines while navigating the evolving challenges of the industry.”
