Pioneering Queensland winery looks for new custodians

Pioneering Queensland family winery Ballandean Estate in the Granite Belt is for sale.

Established in 1932, Ballandean Estate is Queensland’s oldest family-owned and operated winery.

Visitors can enjoy premium cool-climate wines, explore the rustic cellar door and take in the breathtaking backdrop of wine country just a short drive from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

Estate manager Robyn Puglisi-Henderson says the estate remains in a tremendously strong position – both as a business and a brand.

“We currently employ over 20 dedicated individuals who contribute to the ongoing success of the business,” she says.

“We are committed to ensuring a seamless transition and are open to staying actively involved in the business, providing support and continuity for the new ownership.

“Now that Mum and Dad have stepped back from the business, generation four is also considering transition to retirement and the chance to explore other interests outside of the family business.

“Our children are on their own paths, and we hope to find new custodians with fire in their bellies who share our vision for the Granite Belt’s booming wine industry.

“This transition reflects our family’s retirement planning and is purely a matter of timing.

“We know that this new chapter will elevate the Granite Belt wine region, further strengthening its role in Queensland and Australian wine tourism.”

Robyn says the family has poured generations of passion into Ballandean Estate Wines and the Queensland wine industry.

“We are proud of the thriving business we’ve built and the successful wine and tourism industries that we have helped to create,” she says.

“More than 60,000 people visited our cellar door last year.

“The Granite Belt is poised for unprecedented growth.

“Tourism continues to burgeon across our region as investments pour into the local area, offering incredible potential for expanding wine experiences and tourism ventures.”

Robyn says that Ballandean Estate has not only grown some of Australia’s finest wines, but also played an instrumental role in putting Queensland on the global wine map.

“The winery offers untapped potential for expansion in wine tourism,” she says.

“With increasing demand for unique travel experiences, the estate is primed for additional hospitality ventures such as boutique accommodations, curated wine-tasting events and immersive vineyard experiences that bring guests closer to the heart of Australian winemaking.”

The sale includes the 190-acre property which includes the vineyard, water licences and a fully equipped processing facility which has a current production capacity of 250 tonnes with potential to expand to 300 tonnes.

The 90 acres of grapes including Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot, Saperavi, Nebbiolo, Malbec, Durif, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Fiano, Viognier, Malvasia and Moscato Giallo.

The multiple revenue streams include export, cellar door, wholesale, online sales and and private events.

It won a plethora of trophies at the 40th Annual Queensland Wine Awards in October 2024 including: Winery of the Year, Winemaker of the Year (Boxi Zhen), Viticulturalist of the Year (Angelo Puglisi and Robyn Robertson), Champion Wine of Show (2024 Fiano), Champion Mainstream White Variety (2023 Chardonnay), Champion Mainstream Red Variety (2023 Shiraz Viognier), Champion Emerging Variety White (2024 Fiano) and Champion Estate Grown White (2024 Fiano).
