The Brown Family Wine Group is among Prosecco makers in Australia celebrating the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union.
As part of the FTA Australian winemakers can keep using the name ‘Prosecco’ for domestic wine sales.
However, Australian Prosecco exports to the EU will be phased out over the next 10 years.
It has ended a long and anxious wait for Prosecco producers in Australia.
Prosecco is worth more than $200 million to the Australian wine industry.
“We are popping corks in celebration here!” says Katherine Brown, luxury portfolio manager of the Brown Family Wine Group based in Milawa, Victoria.
“We’re feeling really positive about the announcement.
“It’s been a long road to get here, so there’s definitely a sense of relief and pride across the King Valley and Prosecco producers across the country.
“Retaining the use of Prosecco in Australia is a great outcome and gives producers and consumers real confidence moving forward.
“We’ll certainly be raising a glass of Australian Prosecco to mark the moment.”
And yes, Katherine really was popping corks in preparation for a live cross to Channel 10.
