The Shingleback cellar door in McLaren Vale will close in March as the Australian wine industry reels from overproduction, rising costs, a wine tourism downturn and falling sales.
The news comes just a few days after Penfolds announced that it will be closing its cellar door at Nuriootpa in June.
Endeavour Drinks – which owns more than 2,000 pubs and retail stores including BWS and Dan Murphy’s – bought Shingleback in August 2022.
Shaine DeVenny, head of Paragon Wine Estates which is part of Endeavour – told The Advertiser the decision to shut the Stump Hill Road business was made after “tremendous consideration”.
“The difficult landscape of rising operational costs, reduced expendable incomes and tourism fluctuations, like many other hospitality businesses are experiencing, were pivotal factors in this difficult decision,” she said.
Paragon says Shingleback wines will be available online and through retail channels.
Paragon Wine Estates also owns Krondorf Wines, Oakridge Wines, Chapel Hill Wine, Riddoch Wines, Isabel Estate, Josef Chromy.
Kym and John Davey started Shingleback in 1998 and won the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2006.
The Penfolds cellar door will close in June with the company focusing on the Magill Estate Cellar Door.
