An Hour with Fraser McKinley from Sami-Odi Wines

By Tuesday 17 June 2025No Comments

When Fraser McKinley hits send on the email announcing the availability of his small but beautiful offering of Sami-Odi wines, the response is immediate.

It happens in January and the annual production of 1,000 cases is snapped up by the oversubscribed allocation and wait lists (more than 30,000 people) in two days.

It’s a dream scenario really, but Fraser isn’t a fan of terms like ‘allocation’ or ‘cult wines’.

“I never liked the word allocation in my wine sales time, because to me, it was like, ‘Do you want to buy it or not? I’m not going to hold it here for you when others want to buy it’.”

On June 10, a vertical of Fraser’s Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah (from 2007 to 2023) sold for $12,390 (including buyers commission) as part of the Langtons x Barossa Australian Fine Wine Auction in Sydney.

As collectable wines go, Sami-Odi was in good company alongside the likes of Henschke, Penfolds, Rockford, Chris Ringland and The Standish Wine Company.

“I’m always massively taken aback when I see our wine in context with wines like those,” Fraser says.

“It blows my mind a little bit, because it’s not really how I picture what we do.”
