The Australian wine community has been shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Katnook Coonawarra senior winemaker Wayne Stehbens yesterday (Sunday).
Katnook Coonawarra posted this message on Facebook: “Wayne has been an institution on the Coonawarra winemaking scene for more than 30 years and his passion, skill and dedication to Katnook and the Coonawarra region in general will be greatly missed.
“Our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Wayne’s treasured wife Michelle and family. Wayne leaves behind many friends and colleagues who are devastated by this news.
“We will make further announcements in due course.”
No other details about Wayne’s death are available at this stage.
Wayne had been with Katnook since 1980. One of Australia’s most respected winemakers, he won numerous awards during his career including two Jimmy Watson Trophies (1987 and 1998).
Katnook Coonawarra is part of the Wingara Wine Group.
