The Australian wine community is mourning the loss of Margaret River winemaker and distiller Sarah James-Martin in a car crash on Bussell Highway recently.

Sarah, who was 53, leaves behind her husband Nick James-Martin and children George and Ami.

“We lost the better half of Wines of Merritt last weekend in a tragic car accident just north of Margaret River,” the family says in a statement on Facebook.

“Sarah was the voice of reason in our life and business, the brilliant creator of Merritt Distilling Oceanic Gin and much enjoyed our Margaret River Farmers’ Market stall.

“The proud Mum of George and Ami, her devotion to them and their pursuit of soccer glory with Football Margaret River, regional LNJSA & WA country and the countless k’s getting them to games and training was amazing.

“We will miss her dearly.

“In lieu of flowers, you can support her memory by enjoying a glass of her Oceanic Gin.”

Among the tributes Leigh Hynes said, “The most heartbreaking loss of a beautiful woman.

“On every visit to our workshop Sarah would light the place up with positive energy and laughter, exactly the same as you do Nick.

“I’ll miss our little chats about life, business and family but I also feel very fortunate to have met such a lovely lady.

“Our heartfelt condolences to Nick, George and Ami from Leigh and the Subie family.”

Jacqueline Verrall said, “I am so very sad to read this.

“She was such an amazing person.

“Much love to all those who loved her and who she loved.

“She will be loved and missed forever.”

A celebration of Sarah’s life for family, friends and colleagues will be held on Wednesday 12 November at the Wine Chapel, Howard Park, at 1pm – and in Adelaide on Tuesday 16 December.

The family relocated to Margaret River from Adelaide in 2017, establishing Wines of Merritt which has become one of Margaret River’s most respected wine brands.

WBM – Australia’s Wine Business Magazine, sends our sincere condolences to Nick and family.
