Sandy Oatley and his daughter Nicky Oatley of A.G. Oatley Wines have purchased Barossa Valley winery Murray Street Vineyards at Greenock.

The purchase includes the winery, brand, cellar door and extensive vineyard holdings.

It follows a string of wine business transactions in recent weeks including:

• Angove Family Winemakers purchasing Temple Bruer from the administrators;

• Aaron Drummond and Stonier partners buying Seppelt Great Western from Treasury Wine Estates;

• Sword Distribution buying the Tollana Wines brand from Treasury Wine Estates;

• Tomich Wines buying the Nepenthe cellar door and vineyard in the Adelaide Hills from Australian Vintage; and

• Redbank Wines acquiring Gapsted Estate Winery.

“Murray Street Vineyards has built an outstanding reputation in the Barossa and we’re honoured to be its next custodians,” said Sandy Oatley.

“As a family business ourselves, we share the values that have shaped Murray Street, and we look forward to building on the legacy Bill and Janai have created.”

Founded in 2001 by William (Bill) Jahnke and Andrew Seppelt, Murray Street Vineyards became fully family-owned in 2014 when Janai Brengman joined her father as co-owner.

“Building Murray Street Vineyards has been a passion for our family,” said Janai.

“We are incredibly proud of the wines and community we have built over the past 25 years, and we are confident the Oatley family will guide the brand into its next exciting chapter.”

The 137.60 hectare property includes 93 hectares of vines across 14 varieties.

The flagship wine is the Murray Street Va de Vi ($250).

Sandy Oatley is the owner and executive chairman of A.G. Oatley Wines and Oatley Fine Wine Merchants.

His legendary father Bob Oatley founded the Rosemount Estate empire which merged with Southcorp in 2001.

The Oatley family bought Hamilton Island in 2003 for $200 million.

They sold it in December last year to US equity firm Blackstone for an estimated $1.2 billion.

A.G. Oatley Wines owns Montrose Winery along with the brands Robert Oatley and Wild Oats.

Oatley Fine Wine Merchants is the domestic distribution company.

Its portfolio includes dozens of Australia’s leading wine brands including Hentley Farm, Yering Station, Tamar Ridge and Philip Shaw.
