Adelaide wine-lovers, get your glasses at the ready for some serious tasting – the time is upon us again for the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. A chance to exhibit, judge, taste and showcase Australia’s best drops, the show is fast becoming one of the country’s most anticipated events in the wine industry and for lovers of wine-alike.
Here at WBM, we were given a little sneak peak at what’s in store at the official launch of the annual show, held at the impressive National Wine Centre last week. An excellent excuse to drink wine (courtesy of Grant Burge) and nibble on local canapés, we also got to hear from some of the big blokes in wine, including Andrew Hardy, chairperson of the Wine Committee and Andrew Spinaze, winemaker at Tyrell’s.
Aside from cracking a lot of laughs, Hardy’s speech gave us an insight into what we can enjoy in the upcoming show – Taste the Best, an event to do exactly that! “This event is extremely popular and why wouldn’t it be when you get to taste, over a two-hour period, any of the 2700-plus wines that are entered into the competition – even gold medallion and trophy wines?” Andrew says.
This year, the international judge is Matthew Jukes, wine writer, buyer and general connoisseur of wine hailing from London. He’s been voted most influential wine writer in the UK and was made Honorary Australian of the Year in the UK in 2012. Needless to say, he knows his stuff.
With more than 350 wineries entered, the tasting showcases one of the largest selections of wines. The public tasting will be held 6 to 8pm on Friday 2 October, the same day the wines are set to be judged, so you’ll be the first to know (and taste!) the winners. You even get to pour your wines yourself and traverse the enormous exhibition hall at leisure – a wine lover’s dream. Plus, you’ll receive a wine glass, the results catalogue and be catered for. What more could you want?
