Some consumers love a wine brand so much they get a tattoo or buy the tshirt.
As for George from Brisbane, he loved Lake Breeze Bernoota Shiraz Cabernet ($22) so much he requested to be buried with a bottle.
Twelve years ago, his requested was granted – adding new meaning to putting a good bottle down.
Robyn Follett from Lake Breeze Wines in Langhorne Creek said George was one of their most loyal VIP mail order customers.
“He would have 10 dozen Bernoota sent to his home in Brisbane on a regular basis,” says Robyn.
“Upon his sudden passing, his wife ordered another 10 dozen for the wake at the golf club, as she did not approve of their wine selection.
“One of his last wishes was to take a bottle of 2004 Bernoota with him, so he was buried with it.”
Robyn recently unearthed the wife’s beautifully handwritten letter following his funeral.
It read: “I was not keen to put the 2004 Bernoota in his coffin, buy my son assured me they’ll retrieve it and drink it when they put me in the ground alongside him!”
Robyn says, “Cheers to George!
“And his dear widow is still having big orders of Bernoota sent up to Brisbane, 12 years later.”
