Wirra Wirra has announced a hotel development partnership that breaks new ground for wineries in South Australia. They will partner with Greaton on a project to build the first five-star accommodation of scale in the McLaren Vale wine region and the first integrated winery resort of its type in the state.

SA Minister for Tourism, Trade and Investment David Ridgway said the Liberal Government was thrilled to see Greaton adding another luxury hotel to the state.

“Our wine regions are a tourism hot-spot and Wirra Wirra is one of South Australia’s exceptional tourism assets – naturally we predict interest in the hotel will be strong,” Minister Ridgway said.

“We’re certainly seeing that visitor numbers are increasing, and our focus remains on continuing this growth attracting high yield experience seekers. High yield visitors expect premium accommodation options – McLaren Vale’s first five-star hotel will help meet this demand,” said Minister Ridgway.

Wirra Wirra Managing Director, Andrew Kay said the partnership will provide a massive boost to wine tourism in the region. “McLaren Vale has been crying out for ve-star accommoda on of this scale for years. The development will provide a base for visitors to not only enjoy the world class wine the region has to o er, but also the magni cent beaches, food and diverse nature experiences that can be found right across the greater Fleurieu Peninsula.”

A mutual understanding of the importance of integrating the development with the winery was at the cornerstone of the partnership, said Mr Kay. “We spoke to a number of interested parties, but the team at Greaton understood our vision and the importance of capturing the spirit of history and authenticity that surrounds Wirra Wirra. We’re all very eager to see the project take flight.”

The $30 million + project marks further investment by Greaton in the state and their second major hotel development in South Australia after the announcement in early July of the GPO project and bringing the five-star Westin Hotel to Adelaide CBD.

“We are very excited to announce this new partnership with Wirra Wirra. Tourism is so important to South Australia and the need for luxury accommodation is high. Together, we look forward to bringing a resort that is the first of its kind to the McLaren Vale region and where better to have it located than at the Wirra Wirra winery,” said Nicho Teng, managing director of Greaton.

The hotel concept will be built around a theme of health and wellness, targeting the international and domestic high-end leisure market with an operator to be announced at a later date. Approval has been given for up to 42 keys.

“Planning is already underway with some of the world’s best design specialists to ensure this will be a one of a kind luxury accommodation that effortlessly complements its surrounding environment, ensuring a unique and unforgettable experience for all who visit,” said Mr Teng.

Designs are expected to be finalised in the New Year, with construction work to start in 2019 and an opening estimated for early in 2022.
