Angove Family Winemakers has launched the inaugural vintage of its new flagship wine, Brightlands Shiraz 2020 ($125), sourced from McLaren Vale vineyards.
The super-premium is a blend from the finest single barrel from each of the family’s prized McLaren Vale vineyards – Warboys and Angels Rise.
“At Warboys Vineyard we have a warmer site and older vines delivering rich and robust classic Shiraz flavours, while the high altitude Angels Rise vineyard contributes more perfume, spice and acid to the mix,” says fifth generation family member, Richard Angove.
“They are amazing sites on their own, but when blended take things to a whole new level.”
The Warboys Vineyard, at an elevation of 55 metres, has 90+ year-old Shiraz vines planted on a south-facing slope of dark loam over limestone.
The Angels Rise Vineyard in Clarendon sits at an elevation of 305 metres and features 25+ year-old Shiraz vines planted on a south-facing slope of shallow dark loam, ironstone and slate.
The historic Brightlands Cellars, nestled in the rolling foothills in the northeastern suburbs of Adelaide, is where the Angove family’s winemaking legacy began.
Constructed in 1875, this cellar is where Dr William Angove’s pioneering winemaking experiments between 1886 and 1893 were undertaken.
This culminated in the establishment of the Brightlands Cellars as the site for the family’s first commercial vintage in 1893.
“Little did Dr Angove know that his early endeavours would set in motion the foundations for over a century of winemaking for one of South Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries,” Richard says.
“The Brightlands brand first emerged in the 1940s with the family’s Brightlands Burgundy, a staple red blend distributed across Australia and abroad.
“Though the label and brand were retired in the 1960s, a brief resurgence occurred in the early 2000s.”
As the family embarked on their latest winemaking venture, they found it fitting to revive the nostalgic Brightlands name, honouring their storied winemaking roots.
Brightlands Shiraz pays homage to this iconic location and to the hard work, determination and dedication of prior generations of the family.
