Cat Amongst The Pigeons In Barossa Wine Show Triumph

By Friday 18 September 2020No Comments

In a Barossa Wine Show dominated by the big players, Cat Amongst The Pigeons 2018 Fat Cat Barossa Shiraz won the Orora Beverages Trophy for Most Outstanding Barossa Wine, Premium Classes (Wine of Show).

Cat Amongst the Pigeons is made by Pinnacle Wines, a division of Woolworths.

“It’s a polished and poised Shiraz,” chair of judges Nick Ryan says. “Contemporary, immediately appealing and possessing all the beguiling pleasures wine lovers look for when they seek out Barossa Shiraz.”

The Most Outstanding Red Wine of Provenance went to Wolf Blass Wines Platinum Label Shiraz 2004, 2010 and 2018.

The Most Outstanding White Wine of Provenance was awarded to Orlando Wines Steingarten Riesling 2011, 2015 and 2020 vintages.

“It’s really lovely and utterly appropriate that in this year, 2020, the year that we lost Colin Gramp, that the great Orlando Steingarten Riesling has won the trophy,” Nick says.

There was a record number of entries to the Wine of Provenance classes.

“This year’s show, shaped by the constraints of Covid-19, has given us a unique opportunity to really focus on the Barossa’s key constituencies,” Nick says.

“We couldn’t go wide, so we went deep. In those six classes judged we still saw the full range of the Barossa’s capabilities, beautiful wines that show an understanding of the history and traditions of this place and exciting wines that proclaim a willingness to chart new courses.”

The trophy presentation was streamed globally via barossawine.com and Barossa Wines’ social media channels.

The show was judged at The Barossa Cellar while six official satellite celebration dinners were held at various Barossa restaurants, with many more private gatherings tuning into the presentation broadcast.

The replay is available online at barossawine.com/wine/barossa-wine-show.

The Barossa Wine Show Experience – collections drawn from the highest scoring wines including the trophy winners – are on sale at barossawine.com/shop.
