Heatwave: Hills Crush Festival Going Ahead But Some Wineries Will Close

By Monday 22 January 2018No Comments

Longview Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills has made the “heartbreaking decision” to postpone The Piece Project, one of the most popular events of the annual Crush Festival, ahead of a heatwave on the Australia Day long weekend.

The move follows the decision by several cellar doors in the Adelaide Hills to close recently on a ‘Catastrophic’ fire rating day.

The temperature in Adelaide is forecast to reach 40 degrees on Friday, 42 on Saturday and 42 on Sunday. Mount Barker is expecting 38, 42 and 41 degrees respectively over those three days.

Lobethal Road has cancelled its Crush event but the cellar door will be open. Pike & Joyce and Anderson Hill are both going ahead with their Crush events on Friday, but their cellar doors will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Longview Vineyard managing director Peter Saturno said on Facebook: “For the safety of our artists, our guests and our staff, for the first time in its eight-year history we have made the unfortunate decision to postpone the event until later in the year.

“Looking ahead, there is the real possibility of extreme fire danger and other heat related risks and as the event is mostly outdoor event, we have made an informed, very tough choice.”

Longview has received a very positive response on Facebook to its decision.

Kerry Treuel, executive officer of the Adelaide Hills Wine Region, released this statement to WBM this morning (Tuesday): “As you would be well aware the weather forecast for this weekend is extremely hot and while the CFS have advised that at this stage it is not likely to be a catastrophic or extreme fire danger rating across any of the days, this can change very quickly and all individual wineries and venues need to be prepared and follow their own risk management and bushfire safety plans.”

Crush is the Adelaide Hills’ most popular annual event, drawing thousands to the region.

All tickets to the Longview event were sold through Moshtix and will be fully refunded.

Longview’s air-conditioned Tasting Room will still be open from 11am until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

WBM is interested to hear from individual Adelaide Hills wineries about their plans for this weekend. Email info@madiganmedia.com.au
