Ben Marx is the new chief winemaker of Sevenhill Cellars in the Clare Valley in this the 175th year of continuous winemaking at the winery.

He is just the 10th chief winemaker in Sevenhill’s 175 year history.

Ben is also only the third non-Jesuit winemaker in that time.

His appointment was announced by The Australian Province of the Society of Jesus – The Jesuits – and the board of Sevenhill Cellars.

Ben comes to Sevenhill after winemaking roles at local wineries Knappstein and Jim Barry Wines.

“After seven years at Jim Barry’s I am more than excited to join the team at Sevenhill Cellars – a new challenge, a fruit resource second to none and a team committed to not only be around for another 175 years, but also to make wine of global benchmark quality,” Ben says.

“With some major developments happening over the next few years and the commitment of the Jesuits, I can’t wait to get started.”

Ben brings to the role a deep understanding of Clare’s viticultural landscape, a firm grounding in its traditions and a clear vision for its stylistic evolution.

Founded in 1851, Sevenhill is the Clare Valley’s foundational winery and for its first 150 years, winemaking was conducted by Jesuits.

In addition to its award-winning contemporary wines, Sevenhill is the leading producer of sacramental wines in the Asia-Pacific region.

It is also the heart of a vibrant Catholic parish, a place for spiritual retreat and reflection and the most visited tourist site in the Clare Valley.

Fr Brendan J Kelly SJ, superior, the Jesuit Community says, “The mantra of the first Jesuit to Sevenhill was ‘courage, patience and hope’.

“We are very excited at the appointment of Ben Marx as chief winemaker, joining our general manager, Christian Fraser, and viticulturist, Craig Richards, forming a formidable team to continue the tradition at Sevenhill of quality wine for over 175 years.”

Tom Barry from Jim Barry Wines says, “The Barry family, particularly my late grandparents, Jim and Nancy, has a long association with Sevenhill Cellars and the Jesuit community, with mutual support at the heart of that relationship in both winemaking and in faith.

“We wish Ben and the Sevenhill team all the best as they embark on this new chapter.”
