Yalumba – celebrating 175 years of family winemaking – has released The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz 2019 on La Place de Bordeaux.

This is the second release of The Octavius on the prestigious international distribution network, following the success of the 2018 vintage debut in September last year.

The Hill-Smith family is also offering a limited museum release of The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz 2009.

Known for its deep connection to the Barossa’s rich winemaking heritage, The Octavius is crafted from some of the world’s oldest Shiraz vineyards, with vines dating back to 1854.

The wine stands as a symbol of Yalumba’s commitment to preserving and celebrating the legacy of the Barossa.

Robert Hill-Smith says, “We are honoured to be part of La Place de Bordeaux, showcasing The Octavius on a global stage.

“The 2019 vintage is a true expression of the Barossa’s unique terroir, representing Australia’s winemaking prowess.

“As we celebrate 175 years of family winemaking, this milestone release reflects our dedication to crafting wines with a sense of place and history.

“It’s rare to find vines with the depth of heritage we have in the Barossa, and The Octavius is a tribute to these ancient vineyards and our winemaking tradition.

“The release of the 2009 vintage from our museum collection allows wine enthusiasts to experience the beauty of a perfectly cellared 15-year-old Barossa Shiraz.”

The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz has long been a hallmark of Yalumba’s winemaking craft, with its powerful yet elegant structure showcasing the depth and richness of old-vine Barossa Shiraz.

The 2019 vintage displays intense aromas of black fruits with fragrant vanilla and spice that lingers on the palate.

It is generous, balanced and rich, displaying a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation that has become synonymous with Yalumba’s winemaking philosophy.

Yalumba is home to some of Australia’s oldest Shiraz vines.

Yalumba The Octavius is sourced from 55 percent Eden Valley Shiraz and 45 percent Barossa Valley Shiraz with an average vine age of 104 years.

The Clifton Park Shiraz vineyard (17 percent of the blend), Yalumba’s oldest Shiraz block, is located in Eden Valley in a hamlet known as Wilton and was planted in 1854 on own roots.

With an emphasis on crafting bespoke barrels from the ground up, Yalumba is the only winery in the Southern Hemisphere to have an operational, on-site cooperage.

This enables full control over the oak which the head cooper carefully crafts into barrels, providing the unique flavour, complexity and aroma to our wines.

The wine is set to further elevate Yalumba’s presence in the international fine wine arena through La Place de Bordeaux, reinforcing the Barossa’s place among the world’s most renowned wine regions.

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 2019 and 2009 are available through La Place de Bordeaux and can be purchased from specific negociants worldwide, including CVBG, Ulysse Cazabonne, The Wine Merchant, Twins, Sovex, Maison Sichel and Pardela Wines.

Samuel Smith & Son and Negociants New Zealand remain exclusive distributors for Australia and New Zealand only.
