Yalumba has announced the retirement of revered winemaker Kevin Glastonbury (KG) from the company after an extraordinary career spanning nearly five decades.

KG joined the Hill-Smith Family Estates (HSFE) winemaking team in January 1999, bringing with him a deep passion for Barossa wines and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Over his 27 vintages with Yalumba, KG has been instrumental in shaping the style and success of Yalumba’s fine red wine portfolio, garnering more than 70 trophies including the Most Outstanding Barossa Red for five consecutive years at the Barossa Wine Show, and Best Shiraz Trophy at the Adelaide Wine Show in 2015 and 2016 for The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz 2013.

KG’s expertise has been built over 49 vintages.

His influence extends beyond the winery, having served as chair of the Barossa Wine Show (2007-2009) and as a highly regarded judge at major wine competitions across the country.

In 2007 he was named Winestate Magazine’s Winemaker of the Year, and in 2010 he was selected for the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial, reflecting his deep commitment to the Australian wine industry.

“As Yalumba’s 2019 Signatory, KG leaves an enduring legacy in our cellars, and we look forward to releasing the final wines from his remarkable career in the coming years,” said Louisa Rose, winemaker and global ambassador for Yalumba.

“We are honoured to have had KG’s incredible expertise and passion shaping Yalumba’s fine red wines.

“His legacy will be carried forward by our talented winemaking team, led by Sam Wigan, ensuring that the philosophy and craftsmanship he championed continue in future vintages.

“KG will remain with Yalumba until 27 June, providing time to celebrate his contributions and wish him well.

“His influence will also live on through the Yalumba Museum Release, which showcases the exceptional longevity and quality of the wines he has helped create over the years.”
