Nick Ryan doesn’t rate some of his skills nearly as highly as the great bottles he reviews.
He reels off all the things he says he is not good at, like having a ‘proper’ job in an office and also working out how much to charge to host a wine event – which is why he now has an agent.
Nick is not good at watching his AFL team Port Adelaide on TV, especially if they’re losing.
“The kids don’t watch it with me anymore,” he says.
“They’re scared of me.”
What Nick is good at – gifted at – is writing. Forget wine for a minute, the larger-than-life freelancer he is one of Australia’s best writers full stop.
“I’m shit at everything else,” he says over a glass of Chardonnay one Friday afternoon at Magill Estate Cellar Door, after tasting Penfolds Grange 2020 and stablemates with Peter Gago, mentioning 2021 St Henri could be the best vintage he has tasted and 2022 Bin 389 is also looking smart.
