Emmanuelle Bekkers is on the cover of the September-October edition of WBM – Australia’s Wine Business Magazine. Here is a sneak preview of the feature story.
When WBM contacts French-born McLaren Vale-based Emmanuelle Bekkers to ask for an hour of her time, she is in an aeroplane somewhere between Adelaide and her homeland.
It’s a journey she knows well.
Emmanuelle has lived in Australia since 1996, working two vintages each year, one in Australia and one in France where she makes her white wines in Chablis.
While she’s there, she works hard to place her McLaren Vale creations on the tables at top Michelin-starred Paris restaurants and bars.
Upon her return, we sit down in the intimate Seaview Road tasting room she and viticulturist husband Toby built when they founded Bekkers Wines in 2010.
“It was very a quick two-week trip this time,” she says.
“I went for a wedding, but then I followed on with vintage in Burgundy and Bordeaux.
“It’s gruelling on the body. The silver lining was that when I was flying the long-haul 14-hour economy flight, I had three seats to myself on the way there and on the way back. I was so happy.”
It’s typical of Emmanuelle.
While quietly confident and oh-so French, she keeps it real and is endearingly humble and generous with her time and wisdom.
