China will host the 47th World Congress of Vine and Wine from October 12-16 this year.
The event – which also includes the 24th General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) – is at the invitation of the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
It will take place in the city of Yinchuan, Ningxia, and will bring together leading international experts to address the major scientific, technical and economic challenges facing the sector.
The theme is: “Shaping new paradigms for the global Vine and Wine sector: transforming to meet challenges, innovating to ignite vitality, and sustaining to anchor a shared future.”
China only joined the OIV in 2024.
“The country has the third-greatest planted vineyard surface in the world,” the OIV says.
“It is also the 11th largest consumer and importer of wine, and the number one table grape producer
in the world (43 percent of world production).
“China has developed, over a few decades, a production of high-quality wines expressing a diversity of terroirs.”
The OIV currently has 51 member states, countries producing and consuming grapes and wine, which account for 90 percent of the world’s vineyard surface area, 88 percent of global wine production and 75 percent of global wine consumption.
Twice a year more than 500 experts come together to assess, discuss and approve by consensus resolutions on the viticulture and table grapes, oenology and methods of analysis, law and economics of the vine and wine, and consumer health and safety.
