South Australia signs wine deal with the USA

The South Australian Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Total Wine & More – America’s largest wine and liquor retailer.

Total Wine & More operates 294 superstores across 30 states and is already one of the largest retail stockists of premium Australian wine in the US.

The agreement was signed by Premier Peter Malinauskas and Total Wine & More chief executive Ryan Ross in Maryland.

“It will deliver closer collaboration between South Australia and Total Wine & More to grow the presence of premium South Australian wines across the retailer’s national network through joint promotions, trade education, buyer engagement and category development over the next 12 to 18 months,” Mr Malinauskas says.

The US remains one of South Australia’s most important wine export markets – worth more than $130 million per year.

The partnership will also pave the way for senior Total Wine & More executives to visit South Australia for the 2027 International Masters of Wine Symposium in Adelaide and meet directly with producers from across the state’s wine regions.

“South Australia produces some of the finest wine in the world and we’re helping to open more doors so more people around the world can enjoy it,” Premier Malinauskas says.

“At a time when the Australian wine industry is doing it tough, it’s now more important than ever to ensure we’re increasing market share in big overseas markets.

“Total Wine & More is effectively the American equivalent of Dan Murphy’s. Having South Australian wines featured more prominently across nearly 300 stores is a significant commercial opportunity for our producers.

“This is exactly the sort of economic diplomacy that creates jobs back home.

“Every new shelf secured, every new customer won and every new export order supports South Australian businesses, workers and regional communities.

“We have a clear aim to grow our state’s export markets.

“That means getting in front of major retailers, building long-term partnerships and backing South Australian businesses to compete on the world stage.

“South Australia’s wine industry has an outstanding story to tell.

“This agreement helps ensure that story reaches more American consumers than ever before.”
