The board of Wine Australia has two new directors – Darryn Hakof and Stephen Strachan.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said, “Expanding the board from five to seven members also brings Wine Australia into line with other Research and Development Corporations, strengthening its capacity, governance and industry expertise at a time of significant change for Australia’s wine sector.
“The new directors build on the board’s existing capability by adding complementary industry expertise, commercial experience and governance skills.”
Wine Australia is the Australian Government’s statutory authority responsible for research and innovation, marketing and the regulation of Australia’s wine sector.
Stephen is the brother of Helen Strachan, chair of Australian Grape & Wine.
“Mr Hakof and Mr Strachan bring a wealth of wine industry experience, strong commercial expertise and a genuine passion for Australian wine,” Helen said.
“These appointments will further strengthen the breadth of skills and experience around the board table and provide valuable leadership as the industry works through one of the most significant periods of structural adjustment in generations.
”We look forward to working with Mr Hakof and Mr Strachan, together with the broader Wine Australia board, to support a sustainable and profitable future for Australia’s grape and wine sector.”
Stephen Strachan was chief executive of the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia from December 2003 until June 2012.
Currently a director at Langley & Co Advisors in Adelaide, Mr Strachan brings extensive industry knowledge, a practical understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Australian wine producers, and a strong track record of collaboration across industry and government.”
Darryn Hakof was the global business development director for Pernod Ricard Winemakers from January 2020 until September 2025.
He has worked with some of the world’s most recognised premium consumer brands such as Absolut Vodka, Malibu, Kahlua, Jacob’s Creek, Campo Viejo and Brancott Estate.
“Mr Darryn Hakof brings significant international and commercial expertise, including experience in market development, market access and global industry engagement, further enhancing the board’s strategic outlook and global industry connections,” Minister Collins said.
Dr Michele Allan AO will continue as acting chair while recruitment of a permanent chair is finalised.
“The appointment of a permanent chair is an important decision for both Wine Australia and the broader industry,” Australian Grape & Wine said.
“We appreciate the Government taking the time to ensure the right appointment is made and look forward to working with the successful candidate once that process is complete.”
Mr Strachan and Mr Hakof have been appointed for three-year terms.
