The Redman family in Coonawarra has relaunched the famous Rouge Homme brand at a small gathering at the winery.
Former winemakers were there along with family members and long-term supporters of the brand.
Redman bought back Rouge Homme from Treasury Wine Estates in May.
The relaunch wine is Rouge Homme 2024.
It is the style of the iconic Coonawarra clarets of years gone by – 63 percent Shiraz and 37 percent Cabernet – made in the style Rouge Homme was so famous for.
Co-owner and fourth-generation winemaker Dan Redman described the relaunch as “a special moment for the Redman family”.
“For many people, Rouge Homme was the wine that introduced them to Coonawarra and to medium-bodied reds,” he said.
“Now we can’t wait for a new generation of drinkers to discover it.
“Retro is well and truly back, and Rouge Homme was made for this moment.
“This isn’t a wine to overthink. Open a bottle, share it with friends and enjoy.”
The re-release design mirrors the look of the 1955 Rouge Homme Cabernet Sauvignon, sealed with wax and cork as a nod to the great wines made previously.
Future vintages will be under screwcap.
Rouge Homme was first bottled by Owen Redman in 1952 and went on to grow a following in Australia and internationally, renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blend and clarets.
It was sold by the Redman family in 1965 to Lindeman’s.
Rouge Homme continued to be made and sold, most recently by Treasury Wine Estates.
After 60 years, the iconic Rouge Homme brand was returned to the Redman family.
Since 1908, four generations of the Redman family have made wine in Coonawarra.
In the 60th year of making wine under the Redman name, the family is also releasing The Long Game, a new label showcasing exceptional Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
Crafted from the finest parcels of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2021 vintage, this medium-bodied wine with silky, supple tannins, defined fruit characters and a satisfying, lingering palate rewards ageing but is equally beautiful to drink today.
Dan Redman said the two releases were the perfect way to celebrate 60 years of Redman Wines.
“Rouge Homme has a special place in the heart of Coonawarra,” he said.
“Welcoming it back in the 60th year of Redman is especially meaningful – a full-circle moment.
“The Long Game is, as its name suggests, a label that expresses our ability as a family business to endure by making decisions that always consider building a sustainable future for the next generation, in the Coonawarra region.”
