Koonara Wines to close cellar door in Penola

Coonawarra winery Koonara will close its Penola cellar door on Saturday 27 June.

The wines will still be available online but the range will be consolidated to Koonara’s home-block vineyards: Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Owners Nicole and Dru Reschke say they are working on a new venture.

“Dru and I are not stepping back,” they said on Facebook.

“We are stepping toward something.

“Thirty years in wine taught us what it costs when authenticity is compromised – we’ve had our wines counterfeited twice.

“That became the foundation for our new venture, Securicode, the world’s smallest phone-scannable anti-counterfeit code.”

Nicole and Dru thanked the supportive community.

“Our Koonara community means the world to us,” they said.

“You’ve spent your money, your time, your afternoons with us.

“You’ve brought friends, recommended our wines, turned up to events, pressed the love heart on a social post and cheered us on from your couch on a Friday night with a glass in hand.

“So thank you. Genuinely, from the bottom of our hearts, it really has meant everything to build this with people like you around it.”

The broader range of wines will sell through as stock runs down and won’t be produced again.

Some wines will be around for the long haul.
